Takamishima

The Takamishima island is a little island with 30 inhabitants. The island is almost only made of the Mt. Ryozan and there is almost no flat ground. The inhabitants live in the houses on the top of the stone walls.

They used to grow pyrethrums and chrysanthemums, and it is said that the scenery of the blossoms in spring time from the boats were as if it was snowing on the island. However, due to the progress of the pharmaceutical industry, the flower culture quickly disappeared, and is now perpetuated only by volunteers. When the island used to be prosperous thanks to this industry, it is nowoday filled with vacant houses. In order to give a new life to those empty houses, they are now being used for art projects. The "Pyrethrums house" by Haruyuki Uchida or "Transition House" by Kayako Nakashima are exhibitted in those houses.

From the observatory on the Mt. Ryozan, we can see the Awashima island and many other surrounding islands.
