Manabeshima

Often reffered as the Cat Island nowadays, Manabeshima is about 20 kilometers far from the Sasaoka port in Okayama prefecture. There are more cats (300) living on the island than human beings (270). When you enter the island, you will be welcomed by cats expecting food from tourists.
Besides the cats, the island became famous specially in France. You know why?

It starts from a book written by a French comic artist, his name is Florent Chavouet. The book called "Manabeshima" was published in 2010, depicting everyday lives of Manabeshima people. The artist spent a summer in the island and described his experience with a lot of humor.  The book became a hit in France; and since then, the numbers of visitors has increased.

It is hard to imagine what makes the island attractive without being there. There are many nostalgic places, an old fishing port and the magnificent Manabe School built in wood often used as a film location. Also there are some accomodations run by fishermen, so that you can stay there and appreciate fresh fish dishes while enjoying peaceful time in the island.
