Osakishimojima

Osakishimojima belongs to the town of Kure, located in the Hiroshima prefecture. During the Edo era, its port became famous under the name of "Kaze Machi", an old saying that means "waiting for the wind". The anchored boats would wait for the wind to leave, which would cause the sailors to wait on the island, considerably helping the town's economy.

On the East part of the island, you can find the Mitarai district, that is filled with old buildings from the Edo era, and as the land was very narrow, the neighboorhood has been renovated many times and now includes houses, temples, hostels, tea houses. You can also find houses with traditionnal rooms, as much as some Western style building, from the Showa era. There is even a small theatre called Miyuki-ka, built in 1934, which after the war became a cinema. It is now used as the island's hisorical archives center. There is still a Red Light district from the Edo era and a lot of other places where you can get a glimpse of life in these ancient times.


The island also have a rich cultivation of Mikan (Japanese mandarin) and lemon. This part of the Hiroshima Prefecture is called Ocho Mikan and Ocho Remon, which means "the boss of" to emphasize the quality of these citrus fruits. Moreover, with the climate and the warmth of the Seto inland sea, the island has a well drained soil, which makes it perfect to grow citrus. Also, the fields are being cultivated in terraces to get perfect sun exposure and the landscape is beautiful.
