【Day trip】Okutama discovery cycling tour

2 hours by train from the centre of Tokyo, you will discover the closest national park to the metropolitan area where nature still spreads.
Let's hang out to see;
the steep beauty valley created by the erosion of the river, more than a thousand years old giant cypress tree and one of the largest sized caves in Japan.
While walking through the forested mountainous area, you may also see Japanese monkeys, two-horned serows, black bears, wild boars, etc. In the village along Ome Kaido, which was once a route linking Yamanashi Prefecture to Tokyo, the unique scenery of the countryside is completely different from that in the downtown, and you will surely catch a glimpse of Japan's good old days.
Let's refresh your mind and body by cycling in the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, away from the bustle of the city. At the end of the day, visit the historic sake brewery and try sake tesing.

Departing Okutama station with power-assisted bicycle

2 hours from Shinjuku Station by train; to Okutama Station near the prefectural border with Saitama, Yamanashi Prefecture.
Take a power-assisted bicycle and go cycling!
It is an Hikawa concrete plant you can get in sight immediately. This rusty plant looks like jumping out of the world of Ghibli, attract so many ruin mania.
However, this plant is actually operating, and especially at night, the light of the factory will make the atmosphere much more attractive.

Nippara Cycling Course
Nippara Highway~Nippara Village~Nippara Limestone Cave

After passing the factory, we climb up a serene country road called Nippara kaido.
On the way to Nippara village, you can see the viaducts and suspension bridges of the trolleys carrying limestone to factory.
Pass through the idyllic village built on a steep slope to the Nippara Limestone Cave. On weekends and holidays, there may be traffic jams with tourists visiting the caves, but you can pass by them  on the bike !

Nippara Cave
Nippara Limestone Cave  (Nippara Syōnyudō) is a limestone cave in Okutama town. Total extension is 1270m, difference of elevation is 134m. Tokyo designated natural monument.
In this cave, temperature is 11℃(52℉) throughout a year, summer is chilly and winter is warm.
It is said to be the largest limestone caves in the Kanto area, it have formerly became popular in mountain worship.
You could feel a solemn atomsphere surrounded by the "Hakui Kannon" (limestone column looking like a buddhist statut) , "Gama iwa" (the rock like a giant frog), and "Tenjoshirazu" ( a huge beautiful space ).
In particular,  highlight in 40min walk is the new cave area with a beautifully grown stone wall and a large number of stone columns.
After the tour of the Nippara cave, we'll go back to Okutama Station again. Be careful exceeding speed by downhill.
Let's take a break at a restaurant nearby Okutama station or along the JR Ome Line for lunch with its soil.

Relaxing sub-highway course
Okutama Station~Shiromaru Dam~Hatonosu Valley~Ozawa Shuzo sake brewery

The whole course is downhill from Okutama Station along the Tama River towards Tokyo.
Cycling along valley along the Tama River connected to Haneda Airport, and if we have a time, get off your bike and walk a little bit.

Follow the road along the steep cliffs of the valley and you will see the Shiramaru Dam.
It is a relatively small dam that is erected by blocking the valley, so the view from above the dam is just "photogenic".
As a rare feature of this dam, in order not to prevent the fish from coming up from the downstream of the Tama river, a dedicated fish ladder is maintained.
This spiral staircase opens all day (July 20-August 31) during weekends and holidays and summer holidays.After passing the Shiramaru Dam, you will reach a beautiful Hatonosu Valley.
Hatonosu Valley is a spot where you can enjoy a dynamic view, splashing the river and flowing through the Tama River amidst large rocks.
If time permits, park a bicycle and take a walk down a valley. From the Hatonosu Kobashi Suspension Bridge, you can see the beauty of the valley up close.After passing the Hatonosu Valley, let's go through Ome Kaido again, and run straight to Mitake Station, which is the starting point for hiking Mt.Mitake.
The width of the steep valley that has been spreads, and the riverside is full of tourists, camping guests, kayakers and other people who enjoy activities and people who come back from the hike from mountain.

Continue for one more station and reach Ozawa Shuzo (Ozawa Sake Brewery).

Ozawa Sake Brewery(Sake tasting+Return the bicycle)ー Sawai Station → Tokyo

Ozawa Shuzo is a prestigious sake brewery which established in the Edo era in Japan, and the name of the representative sake brand, "Sawanoi" is well-known to sake enthusiasts.
If you return your bicycle here, why don't you try testing sake?

Up to 3 cups are included in the price for the service. (Some types of sake have an additional charge of ¥ 100 to ¥ 300.)
If you want to try more, you can enjoy it for 100 yen to 400 yen, so please compare your favorite one by drinking sake that Okutama's famous water has cultivated.
After that, you just go back to Tokyo by train, so it doesn't matter how drunk you are!

In addition, you can enjoy the view of the valley while relaxing at the open terrace in the garden. Let's enjoy the gourmet and scenery of Okutama until the departure time of the train.

* Please note that there is a possibility that we will not be in time for the opening hours of the tasting corner depending on the arrival time of Ozawa Shuzo.[The return route]
From Sawai Station, a 5-minute walk from Ozawa Shuzo, connected to Shinjuku on the JR Ome Line. (1 hour 30 minutes, one transfer at Ome Station)
Expected arrival:18:00 to 19:00
The tour will be dismissed in Shinjuku, but possible to get off on the way.
Also recommended to get off at Ome Station and take a walk through the retro city.

  • This tour involves basic cycling and short walk. Please join us with easy-to-walk shoes.

  • We will carry out even in rainy weather except adverse weather conditions. Even in fine weather, the weather on the mountain is very uncertain, so please be sure to bring rainwear just in case.

  • The minimum drinking age in Japan is 20.

  • The order of the tour may be changed depending on traffic conditions, weather and opening hours of each stops.

  • Due to unavoidable circumstances such as road conditions or bad weather, there may be delays or changes in the tour schedule, shortening of stay time at planned sightseeing spots, cancellation, delay of arrival at the return destination, etc. This is NOT eligible for a refund.
