1 day
If you're staying in Tokyo for a while or get sick of the noise and concrete buildings of Tokyo, why not enjoy a day of respite from the city?
Let's go on a bike ride at the foot of Mount Fuji, at Lake Kawaguchi!

In addition, there are many things to see near Lake Kawaguchi. You will find many views of Mount Fuji's reflection on the lake, the sublime scenery of Mount Fuji from the scenic cable car, enjoyable bike rides at Oishi Park, Kawaguchi Ohashi Bridge across Kawaguchi Lake or the Fuji Omuro Sengen Sanctuary (World Heritage Site) and further away, the village Oshinohakkai.
At the end, you can enjoy a sake tasting at an old traditional brewery.
Various cycling courses are also available.
For beginners: you will enjoy many museums and views of Mount Fuji.
For the more athletic: there is also a course that runs along 4 of the 5 lakes of Mount Fuji. There are ice caves and the cave of the wind created by the eruption of the volcano, the same landscape as the one on the ticket thousand yen.

Tokyo - Kawaguchi-ko
You will take the express bus, and get off in front of Kawaguchi-ko station.
If the weather is nice, you will see Mount Fuji from the moment you get off the bus.
After picking your bike, let's take a tour around Lake Kawaguchi, at the foot of the sacred mountain. It is good both for your health and your mind!

Panoramic cable car
From Kawaguchi-ko Stationto Fuji Midai Station, it takes only 3 minutes by cable car, which offers a gorgeous ride.
You will have a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji and a vast panorama of Lake Kawaguchi. This Tenjoyama Summit is the setting of the Kachikachiyama's tale, written by the famous 20th century writer Dazai Osamu, where a raccoon dog and rabbits will greet here and there.
A spot to take a perfect photography that will certainly appeal to young and old. 📸
We will provide you cable car tickets during the excursion.
※ If we cannot see Mount Fuji from Mount Tenjoyama in the morning, we will go there in the second part of the tour. If it is still impossible to see Mount Fuji due to the weather, the cable car part will be cancelled.
Ubuyagasaki and the Kawaguchiko-Oohashi Bridge
Ubuyagasaki was loved by Koyo Okada (1895-1972), a photographer known for his photo of Mount Fuji which appears on the 1,000 yen note.
This place is therefore famous for the views of Mount Fuji reflecting on the calm waters of the lake and forming a rhombus when the weather is fine.
Located near the Kawaguchiko Lake Bridge, you can appreciate Mount Fuji with the perspective of the bridge in the foreground, or take pictures from the bridge. Many professional and amateur photographers come here.

The culinary specialty of the region
In Yamanashi Prefecture, you can try the local dish named Hōtō, which is stewed flat udon noodles (thick pasta) with vegetables and miso simmered slowly. This dish does not takes much time to prepare and is quite big as well as nutritious.
That's why this dish was popular dish as a ration during the Sengoku period (the age of Provincial Wars).
Why don't you try this healthy Yamanashi cuisine full of vegetables?!

The thick noodles have a quite strong taste of wheat. The soup itself is composed of cabbage and horse meat, a mixture of chili, sesame and Sansho pepper.

The road at the edge of the North shore
On the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, you will find out the best spot to enjoy the scenery of Mount Fuji.
If the weather is good, you will see the Mount Fuji's reflection on the lake.
It is difficult to see the reflection of Mount Fuji in summer, but in April, cherry blossoms bloom and from June to July, you can appreciate the elegant scent of the lavender of the herb festival. In November, the lake is surrounded by the kôyô (autumn leaves), you can enjoy the red and yellow maples (including the momiji tunnel) and many tourists come up to enjoy the 4-seasons show.
There are many museums to visit and events to see. You can also enjoy strolling around beautiful sidewalks.

Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine
The Fuji Omuro Sengen Shrine is composed of Okumiya and Satomiya shrines: the most sacred is Okumiya ("remote shrine"), at the second station of Mount Fuji and the one which is called Satomiya, is at the first base. This shrine was said to be founded over 1300 years ago and is considered the oldest sanctuary on Mount Fuji.
Fuji shrine is dedicated to the guardian of Mount Fuji, the most beautiful goddess called Konohanasakuya-hime. So that's why the main temple pavilion faces against Mount Fuji.
The main temple was formerly located in Okumiya, but as the degradation of the building was so obvious there, it was transferred to Satomiya near the lake.
It used to be worshipped as the base of the Shugendo (a Buddhist spiritual and millennial tradition) in medieval times, as a place for prayer for winning war during the period of Sengoku, and nowadays as a pilgrimage stage to Mount Fuji, called "Fuji-kō".
In 2013, it was designated a World Heritage Site with Lake Kawaguchi and other places around Mount Fuji.

Sake brewery
After enjoying typical tourist attractions, let yourself be tempted by the taste of Japan!
At the end of the tour, we will visit a Sake brewery. You will learn a lot about its preparation, will discover old photographs, and will be the witness of its manufacture! This sake was brewed during extremely cold season at the foot of the North side of Mount Fuji (South shore of Kawaguchi Lake), using high quality water that springs to the foot of Fuji's after several decades of winter.
You will have the pleasure to taste two or three kinds of recommended sake, and learn to differentiate them.
You can bring your tasting glass back with you as a souvenir, as well as a bottle if you wish, available for sale in the souvenir shop.

Oshinohakkai
Oshinohakkai means the spring sources of "Oshino Village" because there are 8 ponds.
It is one of the places where pilgrims go to Mount Fuji, and is a World Heritage Site as part of "Fujisan, a sacred place and source of artistic inspiration". Its sources come from the snow melt of Mount Fuji filtered by underground lava, and spring on the earth decades later.
The water is so clear and transparent that we can clearly see the fish swimming in the bottom of these ponds. In addition, these ponds with Mount Fuji as a background, and thatched roofs of traditional houses that line up around, give a bucolic feeling and simplicity can be called true beauty.
We also recommend trying Yomogidango (rice cake with mugwort) that can be bought at souvenir shops.

Arakurayama-Sengen-Koen Park & Sengen-jinja Shrine
This observation point on Mount Fuji became famous having been selected by the Michelin Green Guide.
It is located halfway up the Arakurayama mountain, and is known for offering magnificent views of both Mount Fuji but also on the 5-story pagoda and cherry trees.
It is a perfect spot to take beautiful pictures, which tourists from all over the world do a lot.
You will need to climb 398 steps but an unforgettable view awaits you at the top!

The caves at the belly of Mount Fuji
This cave is designated natural monument of the country.
Its inside is chilly throughout a year, so it is often compared to a natural refrigerator.
The Narusawa Ice Cave
This is also a designated national monument cave.
You can go around this mysterious cave covered with ice.
※ The ice pillars are still melted during the fall.

Motosu Lake
Motosu Lake is one of the five lakes that surround Mount Fuji as Lake Kawaguchi.
You will see the same view of Mount Fuji as the one on the 1,000 yen note.
You can take a bus to Motosu Lake from Lake Kawaguchi.

Return
After enjoying your day, return to Tokyo by bus or stay for the night.
