Sunrise at mount Tsukuba

On February, 14th the sun rose right in the top of the mount Tsukuba, in Chikusei city, Ibaraki prefecture: this is called Tsukuba Diamond. Moreover, the phenomenon is reflected in the Hakojima flood control basin, the perfect symmetry making this beautiful moment even more spectacular.

Two times a year (in late October and mid-February), the sun rises at the top of the mountain, offering a enchanted moment to the many visitors who came to see this divine manifestation. Indeed, sunrise at the top of a mountain is a holy moment in Japan.

Mount Tsukuba, standing at around seventy kilometers to the north-west of Tokyo, is sometimes compared to mount Fuji. There are two peaks at the top, and a sanctuary was built at each peak. These sanctuaries are venerating the goddess Izanami and the god Izanagi, who gave birth to the japanese islands and many other kami (japanese shinto’s gods). Mt. Tsukuba, where are standing Izanami’s and Izanagi’s sanctuary, is regarded as the sacred mountain protective of the families.

Moreover, due to its low altitude, Mt. Tsukuba can be climbed all year long, even in winter. This mountain, which climbs to 877 meters, is the lower of the list of the 100 famous japanese mountains, which are popular for hiking. There are several hiking trails, from beginner to experienced level.
