Journey through Shimanami Kaido②Mukaishima Island・Innoshima Island・Ikuchijima Island
This time we will introduce you to three islands on the Hiroshima Prefecture side, among the 6 islands of Shimanami Kaido.
・Mukaishima
Island facing Onomichi, the narrow sea between Onomichi and Mukaishima is called "Onomichi Channel".

If you want to rent a bicycle in Onomichi, go over this water channel by boat. In the case of going by car, you can cross from the Onomichi Ohashi.You can see how the ship connecting Onomichi and Mukaishima goes back and forth. There are also spots for shooting dramas and movies set in Setouchi on the island.
・ Innoshima
This island is the home of the Murakami Navy from 14th to 17th century, and is where shipbuilding was flourishing until modern times. It is said that the sea around the island was the calmest from Shikoku to Hiroshima, and it why was it developed by having a channel near this island. On the island there is a castle-shaped water army museum "Innoshima Murakami Navy museum" and you can enjoy panoramic views from the top of Mt. Shirataki.
The Innoshima Navy Festival is held in summer.
・ Ikuchijima
One of the leading citrus producing areas in the country. This island has been focusing on lemon cultivation since the Meiji period, and in recent years their production is widely known as Eco Lemon, whith a skin that can be eaten. In addition, based on the concept of "Museum Island", stone statues are placed everywhere on the island: Hirao Atsuo Museum of Art, and the "Miraishin no Oka" (The Hill of Hope) by Itto Kuetani are famous.
In spring, you can see the cherry blossoms and the beautiful contrast at Kosanji temple, which is also known as "The west Nikko".
From Ikuchijima, we will go to Omishima on the Ehime prefecture side through the Tandara Bridge, the largest bridges on the Shimanami Kaido.
We will introduce Mishima (Omishima, Hakata Island, Oshima) on the Ehime prefecture side of Shimanami Kaido next time.
